A Common Thread

When we first asked Rugs Director Phoebe what she would change about their old Magento store, her answer was: “Where do we start?”

Speed, functionality, poor UX and lack of brand personality were just some of the bugbears listed by this Irish brand as they looked to move to Shopify.

The Magento site wasn’t synonymous with the Rugs.ie brand, and it felt outdated and too reliant on external third party developers, which was proving both expensive and time consuming. With hosting, plugins, regular updates and SSL certificates to worry about, Phoebe and her team needed a modern solution that would also integrate with Linnworks, their inventory management software. With a wealth of experience in Magento to Shopify migrations, our team was keen to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in.

After discussing the needs of their migration over Zoom, the Rugs.ie team took a flight over to our Kubix office to discuss the project further in person. The sheer amount of product attributes for each rug - from being suitable for underfloor heating, to pile depth, to floor dimensions - combined with years of old inherited Magento data meant that it was going to be a complex migration. Our team got to work preparing the transfer of thousands of products, and our designers started on the homepage, collection and product page visuals.

Shopify Takes the Floor

The true beauty of the new Shopify site revealed itself, surprisingly, not in the stunning photography or colours, but rather in the clever development across the store - most notably on the product page. From shipping lead times that change dynamically depending on your rug’s warehouse or shop location, to a custom-built size selector that switches dynamically between centimetres and inches, our developers worked on every part of the product page to build a seamless customer journey.

With so many rugs and colours to choose from, Rugs.ie wanted all products to have dedicated products pages individually listed by colour, rather than using variants. To ensure that customers could see all options available to them, we built a metafield powered colour selector for the product page that allows customers to toggle between different shades of the same rug, ensuring all products are still discoverable and keeping the website looking nicely populated.

Weaving It All Together

Upsells were another consideration for the Rugs.ie team, and so we added a recommended underlay add-on for each rug, which would dynamically change depending on the selected rug size variant. With a handy AR-powered room visualiser Roomvu which allows you to imagine the rug in your room at home, this product page is designed to give customers all the information they could possibly need without seeing the rug in person.

Navigation was the next consideration of this project. Previously, the Rugs.ie navigation was confusing and haphazard, with categories including Children’s, Modern, Style, Shape and Traditional all making an appearance. Our team took time building a simplified site structure, building a bespoke colour selector for those shopping by colour, and using images in the mega-menus to inspire and ease the browsing experience.

As the project continued in development, our Operations team headed over to Ireland to configure a Shopify POS system for their showroom. This would unify all the data and customer records on Shopify and ensure that every part of their business worked in sync. We also had to consider the various trade partners and interior designers who work with Rugs regularly. These B2B customers required their own trade login and exclusive discount, so we set Rugs up with the Shopify B2B functionality and made sure they could easily manage the wholesale orders alongside their usual sales.

Red Carpet Ready

As Phoebe, Ruth and the team got to grips with their Shopify training, it was time to go live and show the world what Rugs.ie had to offer. With all products successfully migrated and relevant marketing tools such as GA4 and shopping feed provider FeedOptimise set up correctly to ensure nothing was left behind, our team hit that Publish button. Rugs.ie’s new Shopify site went live.

Now as Rugs step into their fourth decade of trading, we’re proud to have given their team the autonomy to run their online store themselves without relying on external developers. When Rugs came to us, they wanted to market their mid-to-high-end ranges, and their new site does this effortlessly with breathtaking photography and carefully curated collections. What previously was dated, hard to use and lacking that interior design flair is now brimming with personality and style, powered by the Shopify ecosystem that will stand the test of time.

Talk about putting out the red carpet.
